Ashmore Crescent - Merrylee
The official opening of the Ashmore Crescent development took place on 15th April 2011 in Merrylee.
The former Merrylee Primary School site has been transformed into a £5million housing development, creating 31 new homes. It was delivered through a partnership between Govanhill Housing Association, Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and Glasgow City Council to provide affordable, modern and sustainable rented housing and shared equity accommodation for residents affected by GHA’s demolition programme.
Local Councillor Baillie Jim McNally officially opened the development by handing over the keys to mum of three Kelly Fry – a former Glasgow Housing Association tenant.
Kelly spent eight years living in a multi-storey building now due to be demolished in Shawbridge Street – and says her three children Conor, Callum and Lucy are extremely excited about their new home. She said: “We are absolutely over the moon. I can’t believe the opportunity I’ve been given by Govanhill Housing Association for me and my children. It will make a huge difference to them having a garden and today is the start of a new life for us.”
Elizabeth Klein, Secretary of Govanhill Housing Association, said: “As a resident of Merrylee, it’s great to see the site of the old primary school brought back to life by Govanhill Housing Association to bring much needed new housing in the area. I’m sure that our new tenants will enjoy living in such high-quality, energy efficient and secure accommodation for many years to come.”
