Govanhill
Recycling and Environmental Action Team (GREAT)
The community consultation exercise carried out last year found
that the most immediate concerns of local people were environmental:
litter, dog mess and lack of recycling facilities. In response,
the Trust secured funding for a recycling and environmental initiative,
GREAT, in April 2003. The project
employs two staff, one of whom is a Govanhill resident. The
remit of the project is to:
- increase recycling and reduce waste in Govanhill
- increase awareness of recycling and environmental issues
- increase community involvement through volunteering
Green
Machine
With support from Glasgow City Council and Communities Scotland, the
Trust has purchased a 'green machine' to improve the local environment.
Managed day to day by the council, it targets the streets most affected
by litter and dog mess.
Paired
Reading
Every week 20 volunteers from finance and accountancy company KPMG
encourage and support pupils in Annette St, St Brides and Victoria
Primary Schools to improve their reading. This project has been running
for two years and has helped 60 children.
Careers
Fair
This annual event at the Tramway involves around 20 employers and
colleges and attracts 600 pupils from local schools. The event informs
young people about growth sectors of the Glasgow economy and helps
them to develop the knowledge and skills needed to manage the transition
from school to work.
