Back
in the 1960s and 70s Govanhill's housing was crumbling. You didn't
have to look far to see derelict and decaying tenements with broken
windows, boarded-up doors and peeling paint. Today it's different
- or is it?
Despite
the Association improving over 2200 tenement houses in the area
and building new homes, Govanhill still has a major housing problem,
with hundreds of houses still below the officially accepted standard.
Govanhill
Housing Association has campaigned for the proper financial resources
to tackle the problem and give those Govanhill residents who currently
reside in damp and rotting tenements the opportunity to live better
lives.
We
want to see action to ensure that local people can enjoy 21st Century
housing standards and not Victorian ones. Without the finance, the
problem will only get worse.
From
those small beginnings back in 1974 when the association was first
established, we have become one of the largest community-based housing
associations in Scotland, with a strong track record in improving
the housing conditions of local people.
But
it is not just about houses. Working with Govanhill
Community Development Trust and the voluntary commitment of
local people, we have concentrated on providing an environment that
will improve the lives of Govanhill residents.
Whilst
the physical regeneration of substandard tenements has been the
main plank of our success, we have attempted to build on that by
addressing the social and economic aspects of regeneration which
help underpin and sustain the improvements in the physical fabric
of the area.
We
wish to build on our success over the years and develop a future
that will make Govanhill a better place to live.
