Since
1974, the Association has transformed the Govanhill area by physically
improving the late-Victorian tenement buildings which epitomise
this inner city area of Glasgow.
Rehabilitation
of these tenements has been the mainstay of the Association's Development
Programme since our inception and still remains the focus of our
work today.
Newbuild
housing has complemented the tenement improvement programme and
has contributed to the existing built form and townscape whilst
regenerating vacant sites.
The
challenge of converting existing and derelict buildings into new
uses has been tackled by the Association and Govanhill Community
Development Trust, our subsidiary company, and has preserved the
community's architectural heritage in the process.
By doing so, we have attempted to meet the housing needs of local
people by creating a range of accommodation including fully supported
housing for disadvantaged client groups.
To
date the Association has invested over £75 million in the
community by improving over 2000 homes, building over 150 new homes
and providing support and accommodation for a diverse range of needs
including young single homeless people, homeless women, people with
mental health problems and learning difficulties, very frail elderly
people and older people suffering from senile dementia.
The
Association has adopted a holistic approach to regeneration of the
local area and has invested over £5 million in environmental
improvements and streetscaping to improve local infrastructure and
amenities and provide an environment where people wish to live,
work and play.
