What is GOSIP?

This project has positively influenced the empowerment and wellbeing of the community.

A ten week programme working with black parents in partnership with the Workers Educational Authority gave local parents the opportunity to come together outwith formal institutional environments to explore and discuss the issues they face as parents. The programme was completely flexible with a balance of personal skills development and information. Without English as a second language, coupled with a lack of knowledge of the school board system, black parents often miss out on information and because of this a big part of their childrens' lives.

The womens' group is now constituted. A grant application to the Scottish Executive was successful and will enable the women to further develop their skills as well as visit a similar group in Edinburgh to learn from their experiences.

Future Objectives

  • A group constituted with members being able to encourage and support each other emotionally and socially.
  • A regular opportunity for parents to discuss ongoing issues on schooling and related areas.
  • A forum that can facilitate the dissemination of information first hand, in an understandable and face to face manner.
  • Potential areas identified by the group collectively in relation to wider adult education opportunities.
  • A forum to promote active citizenship generally and create a sense of belonging.
  • The group have also completed a six-week training programme to constitute the group, provided by Culture and Leisure Services, thus empowering them to take greater responsibility to live with confidence in their local community.
