What
started initially as a handful of young black minority ethnic people
that GOSIP consulted within a focus group setting, has developed
into an issue based/anti-racist youth group, with a core group of
20 active members.
The
group meets on a weekly basis at the offices of Govanhill Housing
Association. A diverse programme has been followed over the last
3 years, which includes the Youth
Groups Anti-Racist campaign in five local schools, an environmental
project in partnership with the British Trust for Conservation
(BTCV) and most recently a multi-faith
initiative.
A
positive outcome for the youth group was the selection of
a group member to attend the World Conference Against Racism
in South Africa in August 2001. This was an exceptional
opportunity and learning experience for Future Visions as
he returned to share his experiences of the event with the
rest of the group.
A
highlight for Future Visions was the performance of their
play 'Colour of Skin? Bullies won't Win' at the SECC on
Friday 30 November 2001 at the Equal Futures Conference
- a partnership venture by Commission for Racial Equality,
Scottish Executive and Children In Scotland.
They
have also participated in several focus groups contributing
to formal consultation documents, which ultimately affect and
have an impact on young black people:
Without
Prejudice - A Thematic Inspection of Police Race Relations In
Scotland, Govanhill Digital Inclusion Survey, Police Stop and
Search Among White and Minority Ethnic Young People in Scotland.
Alternatively
