Bankhall Court

The development of ‘Bankhall Court’ was a collaboration between Govanhill Housing Association, The Mungo Found–ation and Glasgow City Council to provide enhanced residential care for people with dementia.

Originally in the ownership of the Council, the small gap site had lain vacant for a number of years until the Association put forward proposals in 2006 to develop it for particular needs housing. Having worked in partnership with The Mungo Foundation on other supported accommodation projects, the client group was quickly identified due to the shortfall of such accommodation in the South East of the city as evidenced by Glasgow City Council Social Work Services.

With the support of the City Council’s Housing Investment Team, the site was acquired in March 2008 and detailed proposals developed for the accommodation which included design information and advice from The Mungo Foundation, as the specialised Care Provider, and Stirling University’s Dementia Services Development Centre.

The development commenced in March 2009 following receipt of statutory consents and funding approvals with completion achieved in June 2010.

Design & Accommodation

The new development provides 17 accommodation units with full en-suite facilities over 5 storeys with associated kitchen, dining room, lounge and staff/service facilities. All bedrooms have private balconies/sunspaces and there is a communal roof terrace and garden on the top floor.

The development complies and is registered with the Care Commission.

The design itself has been developed with environmental sustainability in mind and the development has achieved a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating for its energy efficiency.

The development has also achieved ‘Secured by Design’ accreditation from Strathclyde Police.

Stained Glass Artwork

The Association was keen to introduce stained glass artwork to the stair towers which book-end the building and an artist was commissioned to work with elderly people in the area to develop the finished design which portrays the words ‘Nurture, Respect and Changing Memories’ to reflect the ethos of the development and philosophy of care to residents.

A contribution to the cost of the Artwork was received from The Big Lottery’s Awards for All.
